10 Habits to be More Mindful

What is mindfulness? What is this word people keep throwing about?


Nowadays we’re easily distracted by anything, thoughts, feelings, people, and quite often, it’s a small electronic device. We dwell on the past and future, we aren’t aware of what’s happening right now. However, through mindful practice we can help to improve our awareness.  In essence, mindfulness is a moment by moment awareness of our own thoughts, feelings and experiences. We can learn to silence our mind, calm our nerves and focus on the present moment.

10 Habits to be More Mindful


Here are some ways to incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine:

  1. Wake up early and watch the sunrise. Reconnecting with the natural world will help ground you and bring you back to the now.

  2. Switch your phone off at least one hour before you go to bed and switch it on at least an hour after you get up. You don’t need to see a picture of what someone is having for breakfast. Have some you time. Meditate and connect with yourself.

  3. Practice Gratitude – in every moment there is something to be thankful for, no matter how small. Take a moment now, what are you grateful for? If you’re struggling, how about your breath or how about me writing this for you because I want to help bring more peace and happiness into your life. Be thankful for the smallest of things that way you’ll never be disappointed.

  4. Set an hourly alarm to remind you to stop and observe the moment, your emotions, feelings and surroundings.

  5. Smile at strangers. There’s nothing nicer than a smile to connect two beings. If you’re reading this whilst in public, smile at the next person you see. Tell me you didn’t feel a bit of warmth inside of you... unless they didn’t smile back... and in that case give them this article to read!

  6. Plan to take a walk amongst nature at least once a week. Reconnect with your surroundings, feel the elements and be at peace.

  7. Feed your mind healthily. Think of it as your mind diet. Get rid of the ‘junk food’ the excess television, social media and games that don’t benefit your wellbeing.

  8. Stretch daily. It doesn’t have to be a long yoga session, it can simply be 15 minutes when you get up on a morning to sync your mind, body and breathe.

  9. Uni-task. Multitasking is so last year. What’s more beneficial is picking one task and focusing on that entirely. You’ll notice more effort goes in, you finish it faster, and no stress is building up!

  10. Accept the present moment as if you wouldn’t have it any other way. You can’t change the moment all you can do is change your thoughts about the moment. Therefore accepting the moment is all you can do and will bring more peace.

So there we have at least ten ways to be a little more mindful in our daily lives. Take one, take a few or take all of these ideas to help you find a bit of peace in a busy world.

Your article is very inspirational and funny. An amazing reminder for all of us on how we should be focusing back on our lives, and our purpose. And yoga is a great way to achieve that.
